The Iguanas

They lie so languidly amid the crumbling rout
Of temple ruins they don’t care about.
While now and then,  there blinks an eye !
Stone-grey the body  and like stones, rough-edged
Thus does this  rise, the quick legs matched
With that affair   which snaps at a fly.

We, iguanas,  future creatures
Reposing in the crumbly cashiers’ hall
We see the banks in silence fall.
Not even anger, no laughter marks our features.
What is this age, the power?  It’s a mouldered maze
Meanwhile, the new day’s sun is full ablaze.
