REMEMBERING THE VOICE
Do you still hear him
Daniel, as he talks to the mighty
talks to them in his indirect way
and then –
turns to us
Always soliloquizing
always speaking to himself
that's what they thought
Or did he turn perhaps
to a hidden god in the clouds
a god's presence
in his heart, his dreams
that filled the cosmos, of his body
He lay there, stammering
talking in his sleep
he turned and turned
on the straw mat
his arms beating blindly
a demon, a god
“Righteousness belongeth to thee”
that's what he called
Repeating it
stuttering, as it seemed
“Righteousness belongeth to thee”
“but to us,
confusion”
