Old and New
(After seeing the rock garden in Chandigarh)

The new look
of waste materials
looks better than the old.

Old is beautiful
Oldies said
New is beautiful
The new generation said

Those who traveled from
old to new
met with an accident
While the old and new quarreled
those injured died

Who is to welcome them
The new heaven or old hell
The old heaven or new hell.

Eight Annas

Shopping for vegetables
I got an eight-anna
in change

It is an eight-anna
that Amma had given me
as a hand-out
on Vishu

and I recall how I then sprinted out
to buy sweet-meat

Today,
even beggars don’t accept it
and the grocers and chemists
have replaced it with a toffee

No, I shall not part with it
For I know it’s real worth

Protest

Once the wind, river and stream
fasted in protest .
the rising sun inaugurated their fast
the drizzle came to wish them success
and solidarity

the wind said-
i am not able to travel as before
the River said-
i want to flow and be one with the ocean again
the stream said-
i shrink by the day

as the evening set in,
they accepted tender coconuts
from the moon to end their fast ,
to call off their protest

dawn woke up to see
the sun, drizzle and moon
carting off the three
in make-shift coffins

Abandoned Well
(When I saw the Jallianwala Bagh)

Along with friends
as I made my way in
a roofless podium did I see
riddled with bullet marks
It is still there, next to it,
an abandoned well

Don’t be amused
This isn’t the well Joseph was cast in
Joseph was lucky that he was alone

As I neared the well
the sound of gunshots and screams
grew louder, unbearable
and I traced my steps back

Gandhi

Gandhi
He is once again in news

The young recognize
a smiling Gandhi
on the currency notes
For them, he is
merely a piece of paper

Publishers remember
his experiments with truth
For them, he is
merely a book

Politicians unveil
his statutes at every nook
For them, he is
but merely an occasion

Then there are
seminars
awards
and Universities
to his name

But my friend,
have you seen the Gandhi
that I knew?

Good time

As soon as i learnt
the difference between humans
between humans and poetry
between humans and critics
i was attacked by them

the moment i discerned
between height and the lack of it
color and the dearth of it
silence and din
i was attacked again

a good time to attack
is when one learns of differences

Good men

The messiah
and Socrates
were good men,
yet were killed

I don’t wish to be good.

Search

I searched you
on the dining table
You were distributing bread
to the multitudes .

I searched you
in the church
You were shining
on the farmer's body in the field

I seached for you
in the goat shed
You went in search
of the lost sheep.

I searched for you
at the border
You showed me a world
without borders

I searched for you
in the bed
You danced as flowers
in the mountains.

Love

Do you love me?
He asked her
Yes
She said

Do you care for me?
She asked
Yes
He replied

Conscious and shy,
They both ran and hid themselves

Old play house

It's still there
near to the cowshed without cows.
The tiled roof has lost its beauty

It's broken in many places ,
the sun rays
filter through the cobwebs.

Coconuts are visible from the gunny bag
at the left corner
Next to it on the cracked floor
mushrooms have cemented their place.
One of the worn chappal lies upside down.
There are cracks on the wall
The lizard is chasing a fly.
The red ant is parading out of the house.

It's still resonating in my mind
Acchu, Shruthi, Unni
The count is finished
I am coming .

When You Come

Three summers have gone
Since we met for the first time.
I remember your smile
Your words and confidence
When you were in my arms.

I still
Visit the Peepal Tree
Where we used to meet.
It has grown old
And so has our love.

The flowers in my garden
Do not converse
With me.
The grass adamantly
Refuses to grow.

The guava does not
Bear fruit.
The cuckoo does not sing.
My cottage is a
Hermit cell.

When you come
We will sit on the grass
And listen to the cuckoo
And eat guava.
That day
The sky will have more blue.

Migratory Birds

During last October
I saw them
from my balcony.

They were seated
side by side
like the coins
on a chess board.

Sometimes one or two
would fly away.

They were here
the year before last also.

Again it’s October
flats have come up
in place of the trees.
If they come
I will give them a home
on my roof garden.

Alt und Neu
(Nach dem Sehen des Steingartens in Chandigarh)

Der neue Anblick
von Abfall
sieht besser aus als der alte.

Alt ist schön
sagen die alten Leute
Neu ist schön
sagt die neue Generation

Die welche reisten vom
Alten zum Neuen
hatten einen Unfall
Während das Alte und Neue sich stritten
starben die Verletzten

Wer wird sie willkommen heißen
Der neue Himmel oder die alte Hölle
Der alte Himmel oder die neue Hölle.

Acht Annas

in behelfsmäßigen Särgen

Aufgegebener Brunnen

Einsiedler-Zelle.

Wenn du kommst
werden wir auf dem Gras sitzen
und dem Kuckuck zuhören
und Guaven essen.
An jenem Tag
wird der Himmel mehr Blau aufweisen.

Zugvögel

Im letzten Oktober
sah ich sie
von meinem Balkon aus.

Sie saßen
neben einander
wie die Münzen
auf einem Schachbrett.

Manchmal flogen ein oder zwei
davon.

Sie waren hier
auch im vorletzten Jahr.

Wieder ist es Oktober
Wohnhäuser wurden hochgezogen
an Stelle der Bäume.
Wenn sie kommen
werde ich ihnen ein Zuhaus' geben
auf meinem Dachgarten.
